| Comments | The new management (July 2001), has done a terrific job.
This is a true Mexican experience you should not miss, from the food to the wonderful sombrero-shaped building.
The inside is chock full of typical Mexican ornaments from papier machié fruits to a flowing fountain to lovely paintings of Spanish dancers. Stained glass windows, a different design for each window, face Blvd. Salinas.
A festive atmosphere prevails; perhaps because of this, the TV at the bar in the middle of the restaurant did not bother us at all. The acoustics do, however, make conversation somewhat difficult.
Service is friendly, quick, and they managed to serve our quite large group without any errors whatsoever.
The food selection was interesting, including several lengua (tongue) dishes, chiles en nogada and conejo mole (rabbit mole, 100 pesos).
The rabbit mole had a very nice flavor and the mole was not overpowering. Another way to have the mole was the pollo tlaxcalteco, chicken served with fruit, plantain, pineapple and mole poblano, a bargain at 80 pesos. Chile Rellenos were spicy and like all of the dishes, came with very generous portions.
I ordered espinaca flameada (flaming spinach salad, 65 pesos). Serving of the salad is a Big Production, requiring two waiters, some brandy and some tequila. It's quite a show. I loved the salad and the show. It had bacon and pine nuts and was slightly sweet.
Others had the house salad, red onion, tomatoes and lettuce. The blue cheese dressing was very high quality.
Margaritas here were very good and not sweet. Also served here is the wonderful Casta beer.
Entertainment was provided by a very talented couple, a keyboardist playing soft contemporary music and a young female singer. The volume level was quite reasonable.
Servings are quite large here, you may not have room for dessert!
